IF i'm being totally honest the first drawings that we produced from our objects werent my faveourites.. we had our tutor Kathryn direct us through various drawing styles throughout the day (ten second ones, styles such as :limp, bendy, fluffy, delicate, strong, thick, wet) so by the end of that day we had got through a shit load of paper. It was fun as well but a few of them were dissapointing, however this was such a welcomed activity after a whole summer of pretty much no drawing..

ANYWAY, then things got interesting and we were being taught by another tutor who is head of CAD print, called Melanie Bowles (she is actually very productive within the textiles industry too so i'll link some work). She started looking at texture and markings with us which was what we wanted because after all we are on a TEXTiles course. We had to produce a serious of small, medium and large squares with markings on from our objects. Here a cheeky few ( ) http://www.melaniebowles.co.uk/m_bowles/Home.html( )    and heres a lookywook at her bookywook DIGITAL TEXTILE DESIGN

SO we started off this pop up project with our collection of objects.. mine were a mixture of family/religious/symbolic/textiles/travel/childhood/fashion and art related things....

I am not religious..

Here are some visuals...

POPUP>>>>>>>

WE ended the first rough guide project, which I wasn't too upset about because it was a nice starter but I was really eager to get straight to the main. I wanted a project with more substance and this is what we have been working on for almost two weeks now. It's called POP UP. It started out as a collection of objects that related to us/reflected something we wanted to show. We were told we would be working with these objects in a 2D format over the next two weeks and then taking what we had gathered into our forth-coming workshops within weave, stictch, knit and print. EXCITING. We were shown around the Chelsea Space exhibition which currently is showcasing work called 'Ideal Home'. The curator told us that he had gathered pieces of art work, textiles and sculpture that reminded him of his childhood and teen years- they all had revlevance to him and reflected well with each other and I loved that idea. The link to chelsea space is at the bottom of my blog.

MAS>>>> study task roughrough guide.

So, what I have learnt from the very welcoming people of the curry house's in Brick Lane is that the East End area of London i.e Hoxton, Shoreditch, Whitechapel is that they all share a very vibrant and busy lifestyle. There is a definite sense of community spirit and that is what these men were saying, whether they are walking around the area at night or during the day there are always people around that they know and there is constant conversation going on. You just have to walk down past all the restaurants to know just how much conversation and buzz there really is. The area is known for its slightly 'edgier' appearance. The east end is notoriously known for its rough areas and for it being a little less wealthy than west/central London however from what I gathered and through reading things myself this area has changed dramatically in the last ten years.     Broxditch as I have started to call it to simplify things, is now a part of London that attracts a lot of interest, it is an animated, creative area with an electricity running through it. I have been there a lot during the day to find  lively markets down graffiti ridden roads and I have also been there a lot at night to experience the laid back, chilled vibes of the clubs /bar's. The waiter I spoke to explained how these pasts come alive at night and everything changes, they seem to have an almost arrogant attitude about what they can get up to. He even went as far to say 'The police can't do anything to us when it hits night'. There may be down sides to this side of London however from spending this week visiting and re-visiting the area all I can see is a fairly happy and exciting community made up of different races and cultures that all somehow fit together and gel. The hipsters keep it ever evolving and cool and the Asian community keep it down to earth and maintain the peace. Tourists are around but go unseen which I think is quite a nice thing. It is a place for creative and curious minds to wonder and get up to anything they want really. I am really glad that I got the chance to study this place as it did make me appreciate it for what it really is instead if it being simply another part of the city.

LIVING

"BRICK LANE IS A VERY POPULAR PLACE TO LIVE, EVERBODY COMES HERE.. TOURISTS, STUDENTS, THE ASIAN COMMUNITY, FAMILIES, YOUNGSTERS.. THERE IS A CULTURE HERE THAT FACINATES PEOPLE."

"WHEN YOU LIVE HERE, YOU DON'T WANT TO LIVE ANYWHERE ELSE."

very passionate about their ends

"AND WHEN YOU LEAVE, YOU WILL ALWAYS COME BACK."

All of the above are things that were said to me in restaurants I visited on my journey through Brick Lane.

I also spoke to someone else but this was in Hoxton. It was a man who worked in an art shop right outside the overground station, I think it was called Paintworks. Anyway I needed to get a couple of sketchbooks for the project and they had a sale advertised in the window. When I went to pay he said their card machine was down so I asked where the nearest cash point was. He replied saying 'There is one just around the corner but its right next to Hackney Community College and you'd be heading there bang on their lunch break and that's something you really don't want to do'

hmmm.

The only other communication I had from a stranger was some hooded figure speeding by on a bike and gesturing a gun going off at me with his hands.

Needless to say this wasn't my favourite day of research.

Rough Guide Object Analysis Task:

1. Choose an object/product from a market stall or second-hand shop or found object from the area you are exploring for the Rough Guide.
 2. Choose an object/image /product from a shop, department store, boutique
 3. Choose an object/sculpture/painting/artwork/image from a museum or gallery
Object no. 1- found in area I was exploring
I found this little man perched on a rafter on the under side of a roof as I was looking up at some of the buildings as I was walking through Brick Lane into Shoreditch. I often look up rather than down as I'm taking photo's, especially around London because you find so many interesting things hidden away. He looks like has been made from some sort of stone/clay and molded into his shape.  There's actually a fascinating amount of detail that has gone into such a small piece of art- and I will call it art because to me that's what it is. His legs are closely held together with no separation and his hands are shown to meet in the center of his lap rolled into fists. He appears to be about the size of my hand.
When I look at this object words that come to mind are: small/cold/stone/knowing/distant/secretive/intricate/
religion/worship/truth/high hopes/purity.
I chose this object purely because of the context of which I found it in. Here it is sitting up high somewhere people can't even reach. It looks so peaceful and at rest and this is what reminds me about religion. It has a very zen feel to it. If it were to be in a a gallery I would immediately relate it to Asian art and imagine it holds a lot of value (historically and financially). If it were placed in a shop say for interiors or decorative objects I would think it has little meaning and value. It is so strange how imagining something in a different surrounding can change the whole idea you have about it but where I found it sitting up high, I thought it was beautiful.
Image no 2: object found in a shop/boutique (vintage shop)
This was something I looked at in a vintage shop around Shoreditch area. It is quite obviously tragic however something was drawing me to it for this study task. Knit wear jumper made sometime during the 80's/90's depicting Mickey Mouse ice skating with a snowy mountain background but mainly blue. Mickey's dressed up warm.
Words that come to mind when looking at the piece: Horrific, twee, guilty pleasure, childhood, fun, games, kitsch, America, warm, itchy, retro, hipster,
As I said I came across this in a vintage shop. It is funny how putting incredibly ugly pieces of clothing in vintage/retro shops suddenly makes them overly cool and 'must-have's'. If we are looking at the piece for what it is, then nobody can deny that it is very twee and quite painful to look at. However, when I am looking at it from a retro perspective , I am somehow finding myself liking it and possibly considering wearing it? If I were to find this in a charity shop in the children's section I would automatically think it is horrible. If It was part of an exhibition for Disney in a museum or something along the lines of I would appreciate it and approach it in a different more respectable way. Seeing this on a model in an urban fashion forward magazine styled with electric colours and accessories would probably make me see it from a quirky, on-trend perspective. Very interesting.

Image no 3: object/image found in a gallery/museum
AV summa that: To me, the whole of this area in the east end is a gallery and museum. If you walk in any direction for around an hour you will have seen every variation of graffiti and street art; it is huge here. I thought it would be more interesting to look at something like street art as a piece of art instead of something inside the walls of a gallery. I was walking along commercial street and then turned right onto fashion street to find this at the end of it. It made me laugh to myself because it is humorous and it is intended to be. It depicts David Cameron as a football player and Nick Clegg to be a referee. It's by T.wat and represents Cameron and Clegg’s AV referendum campaign, which adapts the famous shot of Vinnie Jones manhandling Paul Gascoign during a match.
Words that come to mind: politics, lies, honesty, corruption, humor, black and white, brave, bold, freedom

Personally, I think that this sort of street art is very different to a lot of other material. All street art is normally trying to convey some kind of meaning however most of the time it is very personal and secretive to the artist and not totally obvious to the normal eye. This however is very black and white and says exactly what it wants you to understand about it. It does always seem weird seeing something like this in the street. You almost cannot believe that people are allowed to put such things about the prime minister across buildings for the world to see. I also found it interesting that the artist tagged themselves too, it still conceals identity but makes it obvious that they're not afraid to make a statement. It is also comical which I think is so great because politics needs to be portrayed this way to rationalize the whole thing. As this is in a street you immediately understand that it is meant to convey something and make a statement. If I saw this in an actual gallery then it would have to be put in the right context, it could not stand alone. I don't know if it would even hold as much meaning if it was put somewhere so confined with restraints. It survives on the every day street culture and the people walking by.

WHAT THEY SAID

"BRICK LANE IS FULL OF CULTURE AND COMMUNITY.. WHEN IM HERE I FEEL A BEAUTIFU SPIRIT AND I MEAN IT WHEN I SAY, I LOVE LIVING HERE. IF I WALK DOWN THIS STREET AND I CAN SAY I KNOW EVERY SHOP AND CURRY HOUSE OWNER... YEAH ITS A GREAT PLACE TO LIVE, BUT AT NIGHT EVERYTHING CHANGES."

whaaaaaaaaat?

"AT NIGHT IT COMES ALIVE, THE ATMOSPHERE, THE BUZZ FROM THE SUNDAY MARKET, THE FAMILIES, THE LABOURERS.. THEY ALL DISSAPEAR AND THATS WHEN IT GOES MAD. AT NIGHT THEY CAN'T TELL US ANYTHING, WE DO WHAT WE WANT"

okay so clearly the waiter I spoke to was young, he was a nice guy but it was obvious that he wasn't a strictly tradtitional bangladeshy citizen unlike the restaurant's owner who was a little older.
the younger one went on to tell me about the best places to go at night, but not on my own because- as he kept stating- "at night it gets crazy"..

PEOPLE ABOUT TOWN>>>>>> £6.90 meal.

"THE FAMOUS CURRY BAZAAARRRRRRRR"

is where I ate lunch on my first day of research.. I had a dahl soup to start which was incredible, followed by a sweetsweet lamb korma and peshwari naan.. YUM it was amazing, few stares for sitting on my own eating a curry for one but it was more than worth it and I looked like I was having more fun on my own that the dead pan couple sat cm's away from me. Wasn't long before the waiters took an interest in my scribbling, after all it was 3 in the afternoon on a week day and there was barely any custom.

It was nice to just sit alone and take in the fragrance of the curry wafting up from the kitchen below whilst watching the street life pass by. One thing for sure is that Brick Lane is about diversity- everybody is different.

BROXDITCH <3
These were the chosen images from my sketch book, the main picture is of a couple of portaloo’s I saw and on the front it looked like someones fashion work had been stuck on to advertise/display it or something. Along with it I added a screwed up note that I had found displaying what appeared to be a shopping list for balti paste and oils for a curry. I felt that these two items displayed the contrasts of Brick Lane as two communities: the asian community and then the vintage clad generation & trend-setters of Brick Lane.

BROXDITCH

This is a new year and a whole new chapter as a textiles design student. I have recently started my Textiles Design BA at Chelsea.. We have had our first two weeks and out of it as a group of 85 we produced 85 individual books to keep for life which include a different piece of work from every student. I have to say I was sceptical of this project at first as many introductory projects never seem to go anywhere or hold meaning.. however I was so happy with the outcome and it really is a good piece of memorabilia. The task was to make a ‘rough guide’ of an allocated area given to us, mine was Brick Lane, Hoxton and Shoreditch area which I was chuffed about. The plan was
- Visit area and look around take photo’s, do drawings, collect any interesting debris etc..
-Take note of surroundings and atmosphere
-Talk to people that live in the area about life there and what they think about it
-Focus on individual objects and write about/draw them
I am going to put some of the better pictures up that I got from the places
